"E-votional" for February 29, 2012

Then Jesus said, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28, NLT)

If your birthday is today, you've had one fourth as many as the rest of us. That's your reward for the fact that earth orbits the sun 365.242 days. It's not your fault. The odds of being born on leap day is 1 in 1,461, which means there are more than 4.5 million leap-day babies on earth. Happy birthday!

How would you like to have been a Roman in 46 B.C? That's the year that their astronomers figured out their calendar was way off. So to correct decades of drift they made that year keep lasting and lasting and lasting for 445 days.

Do you think God would like to add a day to His calendar? He has, hasn't he? An extra day every week, "extra" simply because He could have made the earth week six days long. Genesis 1 declares that His physical creation was completed in six days. But because the Creator and His creation are not only physical, but are truly social and spiritual, God added an "extra" day to the six days and called it the birthday of the world. We still remember it as His Sabbath, from the Hebrew Shabbat, which means "to cease, to rest." Can you think of a more perfect day in which to rest in friendship with Jesus?

"'Come unto Me' is His invitation. Whatever you anxieties and trials, spread out your case before the Lord. Your spirit will be brace for endurance. The way will be opened for you to disentangle yourself from embarrassment and difficulty. The weaker and more helpless you know yourself o be, the stronger all you become in His strength. The heavier you burdens, the more blessed the rest in casting them upon the Burden Bearer." (The Desire of Ages, p. 329).

With a promise like that why wait for God's "extra" day? Celebrate His rest right now!

Weekly Update - February 22, 2012

Our Mission

Carrollwood Seventh-day Adventist Church exists to lead our Carrollwood community to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

evolutional

There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. (Romans 3:22-24, TNIV)

If Adolph Hitler had survived and was brought to court for his crimes against humanity, what, in your mind, would be the just verdict?

You may think “Death, for sure!” and that would be a justifiable answer to such a question. But what if the judge considered the sentence and then acquitted him? Imagine being the son of Jewish parents who were killed in the Holocaust. I think you’d be furious! And what if the judge pronounced that he would forfeit his own life for the accused so that justice was appropriately meted out?

You might already see where this is going. Yet as bizarre as it sounds, “to justify “ in the New Testament means to do just that. “All are justified [pardoned, acquitted, declared not guilty] freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”

It is the stunning pronouncement of the everlasting gospel. All sinners are deservedly accused, but all sinners have been undeservedly acquitted. All have been accused, and all have been acquitted “by hi grace.” At Calvary the Judge bore the death sentence for an entire human race. He can justify all, because at the cross He paid the penalty for all. Amazing grace indeed!

(adapted from The Chosen, “February 22 - The Judgment of Adolph Hitler,” by Dwight Nelson).

Carrollwood Weekly Update

Our Mission

Carrollwood Seventh-day Adventist Church exists to lead our Carrollwood community to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

e-votional

Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them. (Romans 2:14, 15, NIV)

God must not be totally down on pagans... After all, he's the God who inspired Psalm 87. "I will record Rahab and Babylon among those who acknowledge me--Philistia too, and Tyre, along with Cush--and will say, 'This one was born in Zion'" (verse 4). "The Lord will write in the register of the peoples: 'This one was born in Zion'" (verse 6). Amazing! When the register of the saved and chose is read one day, God declares that among the names wil be the people of the great pagan neighbors of Israel!.. It certainly appears that God is looking for every reason in the book to save pagans, does't it? (from The Chosen: God's Dream for You, "Can a Pagan Be Saved?", Dwight Nelson).
  • Do you look at your neighbor as non-Adventist, non-Christian, unchurched, pagan, etc... or do you look at your neighbor as a potential disciple of Jesus? How can you begin thinking of them like this?
  • How can you creatively show God's love in your life today in the sight of your neighbor?
  • Are you doing everything that is near unto you to do (work, school, marriage, parenting, etc.) withexcellence, so that your neighbor sees the difference in you as a follower of Jesus? What needs to be changed or improved on?
  • Does your compassion lead you to simply feel sorry for your neighbor if something is going wrong, or does it lead you to offer yourself to them in loving service? Who can you show real compassion to today?
  • Think about your mission in your life and in your community. What is one thing you can do today to obey God's calling in your life?
